The Chesapeake Bay on Saturday saw 368 paddlers hit the water to to race right near the Bay Bridge. That included 72 SUP’s who took on the grueling 9 mile course.
The weather was suspect all week leading up to the race and was even a question the night before heading into the race. However somebody upstairs was looking out and paddlers were greeted with pretty nice paddling conditions all things considered. The race started off with glassy flats but as the race progressed the winds started to pick up and made it a grind. For the long 9 milers it was a lot of side chop and up wind paddling, HUGE props to anyone who took on that course and finished it!! There were a ton of smiles coming across the finish line
For the 9 Mile course Brazilian Eri Tenorio came out of nowhere and crushed the race, taking down 2nd place finisher Larry Cain. It was a pretty impressive race! 3rd place was local speedster and Capital Sup paddlers Fielding Pagel.
On the Ladies Side it was Sey Chelle with a pretty dominant win followed by 2 out of towners Kimberly Barnes and Stephanie Shideler.

Race director Shendan Grove deserves a lot of credit for this race. He put in some serious work and did not sleep much this past week and it paid off with a flawless event.
It was also a good race for the MD Sup community. There has been a lot of talk lately about the local race scene and not in a good light. Talk of cliques, tension, people being mean and unfriendly! All stuff we hope is not true and hope that stays out of the local race scene. I think this was a good race for everyone to see that this is not the case, everyone was friendly and encouraging each other to finish strong. That is what racing is all about, it doesn’t matter how or where you place it just matters that you have a great time and want to come back and do it again 🙂
