I hope everyone is going to head to DC this weekend for the Washington Canoe Club’s race!?
It’s the first race of the year and a great chance to get some mileage under you’re feet before the bigger races are here this summer. It is set to be an 8k race but the rumor is the river is rising so the current may be pretty strong and they may shorten it a little for the SUP’s.
It’s always a good feeling to get that first race of the year under your belt and this is a great place to do it. I’ve talked to a few different people and they are all racing for different reasons. A few of the younger guys who have been training are using it as a sprint race, others are using it for drafting practice, and some are doing it just to finish. Whatever your reason, it should be fun.
Three or four years ago when I went to this race there were only a few SUP’s in the race (6 or 7 tops). You were able to pull up and park in their small grass parking lot without an issue. Now with the growth of the sport and it being a MASRA series event, it’s a whole different animal. Your best bet is to show up early, drop your board off at the dock, and then head down the street to park. I think some of the spots have credit card meters but I would bring lots of change for the meters just in case! Traffic in DC SUCKS but the race is early so HOPEFULLY that is not an issue, you just never know in DC so still give yourself enough time.
If you have safe board storage or a good set of locking straps it’s also a great opportunity to see the national capital. So, consider staying for the day with your family and friends and seeing some of the great sites, walk the town, eat great food and maybe even see some cherry blossoms!
The Sup Race starts at 8:30. More info can be found here https://paddleguru.com/races/KumuohuChallenge
