Thanks to Chris Sperry for the quick race recap!!
“On Saturday, August 23rd, approximately 100 paddles including adults and
children took part in the annual Battle on the Bay, held at Fager’s Island
in Ocean City, MD. This is the third stop in the Ocean City paddle circuit
that included the Surf Swap Challenge, East Coast SUP CUP and this race. The race
benefits Carol’s Angels which is a charity focused on raising awareness of
ovarian cancer and is named after OC local Carol Ann Kerstetter who passed
in September 2013 from this cancer. Racers we treated to steady ENE winds
which didn’t present too much of a problem at the Fager’s location. The
courses consisted of a 6 mile Elite Race, 3 mile recreational race, kid’s
race and finally an obstacle course to challenge paddlers of all ages.
Dawn Ehman always puts on a fantastic race complete with great swag bags,
food and drinks for all competitors and awesome prizes. This event also
included a raffle for a Perfection SUP board. Also, for those who
participated in all three of the OC races this season, their names were
entered into a drawing for a very cool package that included hotel stays at
two nice OC hotels, rounds of golf, etc.
Both the 6 and 3 mi competitors started together on a course that was
similar to the previous year, except run in reverse with one very unique
feature. Dawn elected to add a “super buoy” to the course that acted as a
“short cut” for competitors. The idea was that all racers were allowed to
use this short cut for a single lap any time throughout the race. At the
start of the race, many in the lead pack decided to take this short cut
while other elected to try and wait for a later lap to make up time or put
additional distance on their fellow competitors.
Chris “Goose” Norman (Annapolis) took top honors by winning the 6mi elite
course in the 14′ division as well as the adult SUP obstacle course.
Corrine Banks (OC) won the women’s elite division on a new Evolve race
board, while Mark Nelson (Berlin) took 1st in the men’s 12’6 elite class.
Trevor Raithby (Easton) continued his hot streak in
the short course by taking home another 1st place title.
All in all, another great race to close out the Maryland racing season. The
last couple events on the schedule are mostly down in the VA shore/beach
areas including the Onancock Challenge (Sept 6), Ku’ono Paddle Series (Sept
13) and the final MASRA event, Sandbridge Hei Hei (Sept 20).”
